ReplyDeleteAT&T ceases online iPhone sales in NY area
AT&T has stopped selling the Apple iPhone in the New York metropolitan area through its Web site, perhaps due to data congestion, credit card fraud, or routine sales strategy changes depending on whom you believe.
Online sales of the phone were apparently suspended Sunday. Prospective customers attempting to buy an iPhone through the Web site and using a New York area ZIP code get a message saying, "We're sorry, there are no Packages & Deals available at this time. Please check back later." However, changing ZIP codes to other U.S. metro areas yields a bevy of iPhone choices.
An AT&T representative's statement to CNET suggested that the move to not offer any iPhones online to buyers in the Big Apple was a routine strategic decision.

ReplyDeleteGoogle, Dreaming lead to ancient crater
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/sci-tech/google-dreaming-lead-to-ancient-crater-20091227-lg9e.html
AN ABORIGINAL Dreaming story about a star crashing to earth with a noise like thunder has led to the discovery of an ancient meteorite crater in central Australia.
A Sydney astronomer, Duane Hamacher, found the bowl-shaped crater in Palm Valley, about 130 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, by searching on Google Earth.
He was inspired to look there after learning of traditional stories told by the local Arrernte people about a star that had fallen into a waterhole called Puka in the valley.

If you haven't experienced the frights of Vista firsthand, you've no doubt heard about them: how it takes forever to power up and shut down, how the software constantly nags you, how it hogs precious PC resources and how it's incompatible with all-too-many third-party peripherals and programs.
Kenny's Note: Windows7 has been released for about 2 months now. If you are using XP or Vista still, you're totally low-tech.

Pupils 'bypassing school internet security'
ReplyDeletehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_10000000/newsid_10003500/10003579.stm
Many young people are using 'proxy servers' to get round their schools' internet security systems. The free services offer instant access to banned websites, including online games and social networking. Figures suggest the use of proxies has risen sharply in recent years. Security experts are warning that pupils who log on put themselves at risk of cyber crime.
It sounds like an obscure, tetchy area of computing that only geeks would know about.
But when we asked pupils in one secondary school classroom who had heard of proxy servers, every hand went up.
These 'secret tunnels' to the internet are a way of life for teenagers across the UK.
As schools employ increasingly sophisticated software to stop those accessing 'non-educational' websites, the proxies offer a quick, easy way to bypass those restrictions.
“It's just a box that says 'type in the website that is blocked'. You type it in and it brings it up,” said a senior pupil, who wanted to remain anonymous.
Web-based proxy servers disguise a user's activity from school monitoring software.

Google now expanded its browser-based text search to voice and image search too. Google is now experimenting an image-based search service that allows people to submit an image and get Web-based search results pulled from Google's massive archive of indexed photos and images but it's currently available only on Adroid-powered smartphone. As it is not yet officially launched in the website interface, therefore users that would like to try might still have some difficulties executing it.

ReplyDeleteALWAYS NOKIA
http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/nokia-n900-unlocked/
The Nokia N900 is the next evolution of the company's Internet Table, and don't let its smaller size fool you. It delivers more power, adds phone capabilities, and has one of most robust mobile Web browsers on the market today. It also runs on the Linux-based Maemo platform, which offers great customization options and multitasking abilities but has yet to live up to its full possibilities. The N900 feels incomplete with its limited Exchange support and an app store that has yet to go live. Also, the user interface is incredibly unintuitive, making it frustrating to use at times. Like we said, there's plenty of potential there, but for now, the N900 is probably best for tech enthusiasts or early adopters, while those after an everyday, more mainstream smartphone should stick with the current crop of favorites. The Nokia N900 is available unlocked for $569, though you may be able to find it for less online.

Ford brings Wi-Fi to the highway
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/26/wired.ford.wi.fi/index.html
Letting people log on from the road will be a big selling point among 20-something buyers, the so-called Millennials who have propelled much of Sync's success. Millennials will make up 28 percent of the driving population next year, a nine-point increase from 2004.
Kids aside, Ford says interest in in-car connectivity is high among the general public, with one-third of people surveyed by the Consumer Electronics Association expressing interest in being able to check e-mail or surf the Web from the car.

I have found very interesting Image Search Engine, searching for images via GazoPa. GazoPa is a next generation image search engine which allows users to use features from one image to search for and to identify for similar images. For example, users can upload a photo or draw an image via the image editor from the search engine. The search engine will search for similar images from its database based on the input. Besides, users also via other methods such as entering a photo’s url or typing a keyword can make similar photo search. GazoPa can support not only photos but also the search of video thumbnails.
Hitachi America, just released its image search engine, GazoPa, as an open beta version and offers to the public for trying, testing and feedback without the need to register or log in, after about a year’s private beta trial service.
According to users’ feedback, GazoPa has made major improvement in terms of features in this open beta version. For example, GazoPa has added features such as filtering the latest images and reusable images. The latest images can now be displayed by a filtering option. GazoPa enables users to filter images that are for commercial and remix use.
GazoPa has made image searching become more interesting and user friendly. This open beta version is free and users can try it out and provide feedback to the developer for improvement.

Mian Mian intends to file suit this week against Google, claiming copyright infringement after discovering that her third book, "Acid Lovers," was scanned by Google as part of its book digitization project, according to AFP. ReplyDeletehttp://www.technewsworld.com/story/Leaked-Specs-Describe-Lustrous-Google-Chrome-Netbook-68982.html
Supposed hardware details on a Google-branded Chrome netbook have emerged, and they paint an intriguing picture. An HD-ready multi-touch monitor, a 64 GB solid-state drive, and 2 GB of RAM all figure into the mix. Even with subsidies, can Google wrap it all into a $300 device? The company has declined to state whether the specs are accurate.
When Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) opened up the source code for its Chrome operating system last month, third-party hardware manufacturers lined up plans to build Chrome-based netbooks, with availability expected in late 2010. Could Google also be cooking up plans to sell its own, Google-branded Chrome netbook at around the same time?
The blogosphere's rumor mill is humming with purported hardware details of such a Google netbook, which were first listed by IBTimes.
Best wishes for a happy, healthy and successful 2010 to Ajarn Supit and all my friends at ABAC !

By CNET staff
December 29, 2009 -- Updated 1257 GMT (2057 HKT)
(CNET) -- As hard as it may be to remember now, the dot-com boom was nearing its dizzying peak as the decade started. But just as the bust hit a few months later, Google was pairing a savvy business model with great technology, Apple was most decidedly getting its mojo back, and Bill Gates was becoming exasperated with those pesky trustbusters.
Since then, Google became a giant, the iPhone broke through the smartphone design barrier, and social media went mainstream. But what was the biggest story? As the decade comes to an end, we offer our list of the 10 most important tech stories of the decade.

If Google or another big suitor had not gobbled YouTube, it's not hard to imagine the video-sharing site, despite its popularity, failing because of rising costs and litigation with content owners. Google offered a buffer for YouTube (still does) while it worked on becoming more than a neat idea.
The eye-popping price tag, which even Google CEO Eric Schmidt acknowledges was mighty steep, also helped spark a run on Web 2.0 investments and primed the market for other social-media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.
Of course, the great question with these social-media companies is profitability. Facebook, for example, recently announced it turned cash positive, but any accounting student will tell you that's not the same thing as being profitable. Still, if any company can provide a model for turning a hugely popular social-media site into a cash machine, it will be Google.

Developers of open source software projects should be just as concerned about security as anyone developing a proprietary app. However, the nature of the two development processes can be very different at times, and debate still rages about which is inherently more secure -- a secret code kept by a company, or a public one that all eyes can see. Just as important is how each community reacts once a problem is spotted

ReplyDeleteTitle: The future of brain-controlled devices
URL: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/30/brain.controlled.computers/index.html
In the shimmering fantasy realm of the hit movie "Avatar," a paraplegic Marine leaves his wheelchair behind and finds his feet in a new virtual world thanks to "the link," a sophisticated chamber that connects his brain to a surrogate alien, via computer.
This type of interface is a classic tool in gee-whiz science fiction. But the hard science behind it is even more wow-inducing.
Researchers are already using brain-computer interfaces to aid the disabled, treat diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and provide therapy for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Work is under way on devices that may eventually let you communicate with friends telepathically, give you superhuman hearing and vision or even let you download data directly into your brain, a la "The Matrix."
Scientists say brain-computer interfaces will have a big impact in coming years, iBrain helps provide instant feedback to drivers who fall asleep at the wheel.

Q&A: Researcher Karsten Nohl on mobile eavesdropping

This week brought some bad news for mobile phone users. German security expert Karsten Nohl showed how easy it is to eavesdrop on GSM-based (Global System for Mobile Communications) cell phones, including those used by AT&T and T-Mobile customers in the U.S.
Nohl, who has a doctorate in computer engineering from the University of Virginia, made headlines last year publicizing weaknesses in wireless smart card chips used in transit systems around the globe.

PCs that are capable of playing modern video games like "Crysis" come packed with brawny graphics cards and boatloads of RAM. If you must have only the sharpest big-screen imagery and smoothest game play, you'll have to shell out big bucks for a top-of-the-line machine. However, much less expensive alternatives are out there, if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of performance.

At the root of all this technology is the 3-pound generator we all carry in our head. It produces electricity at the microvolt level. But the signals are strong enough to move robots, wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs -- with the help of an external processor. Much of the research focuses on neuroprosthetics, which offer a way for the brain to compensate for injuries and illness.

ReplyDeleteTitle: China shuts down training website for hackers
BBC News|February 8 2010
URL: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8503637.stm
China has more internet users than any other country
China has closed down what is believed to be the country's biggest training website for hackers, state media has reported.
They say the site, Black Hawk Safety Net, gave lessons in hacking and sold downloads of malicious software.
The reports say three people suspected of running the site were arrested.
Hacking is a sensitive topic for China, especially since the internet giant Google recently threatened to pull out of the country.
Google said China-based hackers had attacked its operations but the Chinese government denied any involvement.
The hacker training operation openly recruited thousands of members online and provided them with cyber attack lessons and Trojan software, the China Daily and the Wuhan Evening News said.
Trojans, which can allow outside access to a computer when implanted, are used by hackers to illegally control computers.
Black Hawk Safety Net recruited more than 12,000 paying subscribers and collected more than seven million yuan ($1m: £650,000) in membership fees, while another 170,000 people had signed up for free membership, the paper said.
The Hubei government refused to comment on the reports.
It was unclear when the shutdown had taken place but the Black Hawk Safety Net site was unavailable on Monday.
Cyber attacks
In January Google threatened to pull out of China unless the government relented on censorship.
It said it had uncovered a computer attack that tried to plunder its software coding and the e-mail accounts of human rights activists protesting against Chinese policies.
Government officials have defended China's online censorship and said the country is the biggest victim of web attacks.
China has some 350 million internet users - more than any other country - and provides a lucrative search-engine market worth an estimated $1bn last year.
Google holds about a third of the country's search market, with Chinese rival Baidu having more than 60%.
The BBC's Damian Grammaticas in Beijing says that the reports made no link between the hacking site and Google's allegations.
But the case will help authorities show that China is taking action against those who hack into computers, says our correspondent.
Thanks for sharing great great list of website that more interesting and valuable.Specially i request you to please post also which website is for which.
